Realtek’s network controller deep sleep mode issue

As I’ve noticed a fair bit of visitors interested in my post of Windows 7 and Network Controller Deep Sleep Mode problem, I thought I should write a “clean” version of the post (basically the fix for the problem minus my ramblings :) )

The problem starts when the computer goes into sleep/standby mode, a few components of the PC including the network controller (or adapter) are turned off. The issue occurs when the PC wakes up and power to everything is restored. The network controller doesn’t come on and as per Realtek installation message:

The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable

The best fix is to reset the motherboard and the best way to reset your motherboard is to remove your RAM chips. Leave them out for some time (in my case 30 seconds) and put them back in. And that is all! The motherboard will be reset and the network controller will come out of deep sleep mode!

Note: If this doesn’t work, leave the RAM out for good 10 minutes. Leaving the RAM out longer has worked for some people (see comments below).

Note 2: For laptops, removing the battery for 5-10 minutes has worked for a few.

Note 3: If nothing works, turn off the system and plug in a external hard drive (or a USB thumb drive) and then turn the computer on. Once on the desktop, Windows will try to install the external hardware. This, in some cases, has worked and wakes up the network controller.

Once you have it working, to make sure the network controller doesn’t go into sleep mode again, try this:

  1. Open Device Manager by:
    1. Go to Start
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Choose System and Security
    4. Click Device Manager (under System)
  2. Open Network Controller properties by:
    1. Double-click Network adapters to expand it
    2. Double-click the Realtek Network Controller
  3. Turn off Deep Sleep mode by:
    1. Choose the Power Management tab
    2. Untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

Doing this will make sure the network controller is not put in to sleep mode till someone fixes the issue!

Finally, if something does work you please post the Motherboard/Laptop model and the method that worked to help others!

Yes, you should try resetting the CMOS jumper, also do check your BIOS/CMOS settings and turn off any power management settings (specially LAN power management). And your motherboard might need BIOS upgrading, that will help too. Hope this helps.

It should be set to S3 (uses less power) but try setting to S1 see if refreshes the network (put it back to S3 after testing). Also, try resetting the motherboard to factory default settings. Also, tell me what version of BIOS you are using. You can get it by going to “System Information”.

When you turn on the notebook, it comes with a message where you can press F2 or Delete key (it will say which key to press) to enter Setup. Its a menu based screen. I’m not sure how it will be setup but the option is in their to reset everything to default settings.

I’ve already done the bios/cmos set to default but still same problem occured. I did not try to remove the RAM because the notebook I have ( X-Pad 2880 SSD Intel Atom ) is under warranty and the seal might be broken if I tried to remove the RAM of this notebook. I’ve better bring it back to the store where I bought it. Thanks…

    OK,
I’ve got it (Deep Sleep Mode sh..t) when I uninstall Kaspersky 2011 (official copy).
I have Windows XP (should it matter?), Gigabyte P55-UD3R,
LAN Chipset (Realtek 8111D) is OnBoard.
Interesting thing, ‘though. On other partition I have Windows 7 installed and it works!
I tried that RAM trick – didn’t work.
BTW, RAM trick returns controller only! It does not help with driver installation.
Tried to install Windows on top of the existing – nope.
    S3 S1 – nope.
Some in the comments say that even fresh installation on the formatted hard drive didn’t help!?
Downloaded new BIOS, just wonder if this will help?
So, what is this deep sleep mode?
I mean, looks like it is registry thing, isn’t it?

You need to unplug your graphics card RAM too. It actually has a virtual device that causes the NIC to stay in deep sleep, so unplugging your graphics card is the preferred method, rather than the regular RAM.

Thanks, did the trick. I have the Acer Z5610 and after a power outage/surge in this area I lost the Ethernet connection. On trying to reinstall it kept coming up with “Realtek Network Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable”. This happened a while back and I took it to the dealer approx 30mile away. When I got there it was working fine!!!! Your explanation is spot on. I could not get to the RAM so I completely disconnected it from the mains for the same time as it took me to do the journey and lo and behold, driver back. Amazing…. Why doesn’t Acer fix this problem? Needless to say, I’ve disabled the ‘Allow this device to sleep etc’ in the device manager/driver. Thanks very much again for advice.

Now when i turned on the computer it had showed up and was reading it but i could not connect to the ethernet, so after seeing it there i had turned off my computer to take out the ethernet card that i had put in the computer.

Soon as i turn it back on it doesnt show up anymore so i tried installing the drivers again and it tells me the same thing about the deep sleep mode.. i think i had did everything i could, maybe a busted mobo?

Try taking out the RAM and GPU again but make sure your ethernet card is NOT in the slot. If it still doesn’t pick it up, I’d say its a busted motherboard.

If it does pick it up, try re-installing the drivers before connecting it to internet.

I tried removing the RAM + unplugging power cord for 2 min (that 2x2GB Memory RAM card or DIMMs is assumed as what you’ve meant by removing the RAM). Tried to reset the CMOS, did not work. Tried disabling the Onboard LAN on the BIOS and re-enabling it back, did not work. I run on a GA-P55-UD3P on a f9 BIOS version (latest). Any help would be nice.

Maybe I should have installed the drivers right then and there, but I thought it was fine so I didn’t bother. I tried the RAM trick again and surprisingly it didn’t work anymore. Weird huh?

You can try the RAM trick for longer or remove your graphics card as well. Try turning your PC on without any RAM (it will give some kind of error at boot-up but it will clear the settings).

I found out that apparently a recent Windows 7 update caused some hardware to get detected incorrectly. The process that DID fix things for me is explained here:

    Just share..
thats because the driver installation not proper. I Just do this step and its work :
    1. First, u need driver software from the realtek.
    2. Run the setup of the driver software, and then u’ll see the message “The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable”. Thats OK..
    3. Restart the computer and then enter BIOS setup, disable the network LAN adapter function.
    4. Boot computer again.
    5. Uninstall driver software installed from control panel, uninstall program
    6. After driver uninstalled, restart computer and enter BIOS again, enable LAN network adapter.
    7. Boot to windows
    8. At device manager, update driver realtek LAN manual (via .inf). Use driver from realtek that U have.
    9. Done

Hope this can help u all guys. if not.. i’m just share.. ^_^

If you have a GPU try removing it for a few minutes and see if that helps. Also, the setting the default setting in BIOS won’t fix the issue. You have to find the LAN setting and toggle it on and off (or off and on) to reset the controller.

Gigabyte EX58-UD4P, GTX295, and 9800GT for physics. Board is 2 years old this month. O/S is Win7 x64, 3x2gb Corsair.

I am no.2 for the GPU trick. It worked for me only after I read every problem on here 1st.

I have been through hell in the last 5 days with this.
The ram trick worked, but I when I turned on after a few hours, internet gone again. I went through the same process about 5-10 times then the ram tricked stopped working.
Each time before the ram trick I uninstalled and reinstalled the Gigabyte Realtek driver with everyones’ familiar sleep error etc.

    Note:
By default, in Device Manager you have to go to the top taskbar; View-Show Hidden Devices.

Even after this Device Manager did not detect my Realtek controller.
Tonight I have spent 6 hours researching, updating bios, clearing CMOS, turning LAN on and off in BIOS. I even found the original sales reciept to try for warranty.

Before I gave up (it is now 4:30AM) I decided to remove all the Graphics cards(GPU) and the RAM for 1/2 hour fully after reading these posts.
When the RAM and GPU’s were out, I turned on the Computer WITH THE POWER TURNED OFF.
Even though nothing happens, it discharges the capacitors on the motherboard.

To my amazement the Realtek Controller (and therefore my internet) are working again. Message came up on windows startup: Your “device was successfully installed and is ready to use” (or whatever).

Also, I read on another site for this problem this might be a Microsoft update conflict. Somebody suggested this:
If Realtek Controller shows up in Task manager Right click, Properties-Power Management, and untick the box “Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power”.

I don’t know if this will last, but tomorrow I am going to get a LAN card for my desktop as a backup.
Luckily my Laptop is unaffected because the internet is on a wireless controller that is not Realtek.
If you have a Laptop and are Plugging in using LAN cable, try a Wireless Router (if you can afford it).

I hope I added a piece or 2 to this puzzle.
    I feel for you all.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Another thing.
Booted computer today and no Realtek again.
Booted to Safe mode with networking. Guess what?-internet working.
I think this problem is a virus.
If not, then Windows update possibly.

What makes me think it is a virus is that I now can’t access Safemode.
I’ll update my findings in next day.

I am having this problem with these symptoms. The realtek driver, brown outs, crashing, BSOD, freezing. Thinking that it is driver related I boot to safe mode and start rolling back drivers one by one I figure out it has something to do with the network after booting to safe mode fine but the crashing in safe mode with networking when I went to put the divers back on. I take the network card out and it works fine but the on board ethernet isn’t working. I attempt to install the realtek drivers and it gives me the ‘Sleep Mode’ error. There is no realtek driver in device manager under network adapters. I take my hardware out and still can’t get it working from the ethernet port. No lights or anything on the cable. The cable works fine on other computers and I can’t ping the modem.
I am going to try a new network adapter and PSU tomorrow and another network card and failing that a CMOS. Further failing that I’m blaming the mobo.

    msi r5770 gdd r5 1gb

Try by removing the RAM and GPU, then turning the machine on (it will give a few beeps and stop). Then turn it back off, put everything back in. And turn it back on. It has worked a couple of guys. Let me know how it goes.

I had done that but thought I’d try it again. This time when I install the realtek driver another error message comes up, this one just FinFile failed… then intalls the rest of the driver and comes back to the Deep Sleep Mode error. I cannot that driver to install properly.

I’m about to go to a friends place and borrow a network card and PSU and then do a CMOS. I’ll be back with the results a bit later.

I am 100% sure this is Stuxnet and/or variant.
Backdoor.Bifr was on my system as well.
All these are very difficult to remove.

Google Realtek Trojan for more info.

It stops explorer, resets folder options and changes IE LAN options when you try to remove it. you get locked out of control panel too.
    It is diabolical.

I have removed it but it keeps coming back.
A tool called combofix removes it, but it must be used in conjunction with some other freeware and a logfile sent for a valuation to remove some some entry to stop it “mutating”. Combofix is extremely powerful and uncompromising if you make a mistake.
Pay a computer tech to remove it all, unless you want to spend 40hrs researching it yourself.
I tried to post a procedure but apparently I’m not able to.
    Sorry,
    Paul.

So I have restored 2 of 3 of my operating systems so far. The 2nd Windows 7 is next.
What makes me think it is Stuxnet is it has a Realtek Certificate; see below.

    http://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/possible-new-rootkit-has-drivers-signed-realtek-071510

Get a tech to fix this problem.

If you want to risk everything try this:
Clone entire infected operating system(very important).
Get combofix.(read everything on all pages)
Get new Realtek LAN drivers for your board.
Get Advanced Spyware free(made by IO bits).
Get IO bits Security free also.
    Get malwarebytes free.
    Get ATF_cleaner.
Uninstall AVG. Find another anti virus until combofix run and uninstalled (combofix doesn’t work with AVG)
Learn how to turn off System Restore after running combofix. Google, to find out how (don’t turn off system restore yet). System restore reinfects so you have to know how to turn it off.

Obviously you won’t be able to update all this stuff on 1st pass.

These control panel options need to be set like this; Control panel/folder options/view Change: Show hidden files and folders to: allow
untick: hide hidden operating system files(yes to warning)
Open IE go tools/internet options/connections/LAN settings and tick automatically detect settings. This is an exploit so a computer tech told me.

When internet is working again, in Advanced Spyware go:tools Security holes; this showed 4 critical updates somehow missing??? on my machine. I installed those and they were ALL for fixing remote user exploits.

Wipe and format all your usb sticks.

    I’ll try next part soon.

I had a hiccup, but I think I found the solution. It seems to be sticking.

Note: update of Combofix 2 days ago, has stopped crashing problems I had when running it.

You must backup if you try this. No ifs…You must!
You must also be prepared to delete ALL system restore points.

I’ll write up my procedure soon.

First of all Hi to all
    MY SOLUTION
I brought a new pc case and after i assembled my new pc the network adapter was not working, same error The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable
I tried many solutions posted here, the one that work was to shut down my pc, remove the ram(all modules) and start the pc without ram instaled, leave it for a while and the pc will restart, I let it to restart for 2 times, after that i swich off the power supply and mounted the ram, started the pc and everything was ok.
    Hopes it helps.

Try by removing the GPU as well. It has worked for some. Take it out and leave it out for at least 10 minutes.

Disconnecting the GPU solves the problem but connecting it againg causes the lan adapter to disappear again. Why?

Its the drivers for all I can remember. Try the steps above and see if resolves this. Look into the BIOS and try change the Sleep mode settings (swap between S1 and S3).

many people which have sapphire are reporting the same problem. Is it possible to change some settings related with the GPU. Should it be in the BIOS?

Here’s my solution. Go to “device manager” find that device under “network adapters” (or if you uninstalled the driver it should be under “Other devices”, named “Ethernet controller” or something like that- i forgot). Click on it(right click) and the click “uninstall”(the device will disappear ) , after that click on any other device and click “scan for hardware changes”(it should be back now, under “other devices”, named “Ethernet controller” or something like that). Now right click on that device (“Ethernet controller”) and click “update driver software…”, after that click “browse my computer for driver software”, than “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”(choose all devices just in case), when the list appears after few seconds(may be longer), find Realtek under “Manufacturer” and choose CORRECT!!! driver(if you don’t know the model of your LAN adapter, just go to the manufacturer’s site and check, I checked on newegg for mine—–mine was “Realtek 8111B(PCI-E)”(just so there is no confusion because of this PCI-E, mine is on-board) so I chose Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Familiy PCI-E….”-actually there were 2 of them , and obviously I chose the newer one), than click next and it will give you some warning how “driver is not recommended…”, of course disregard that and click yes. And I think that should be it (I forgot because I did it a few days ago- and if it’s not, the process should be pretty straightforward, so…), I think that after that you should get message how your driver(device) was installed, click OK or close (I don’t remember which is it). Go to “device manager” and now you should be able to see your Ethernet adapter under “Network adapters” and the name should be the same as the driver you chose (in my case: Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Familiy PCI-E….). If you see it there, just restart your computer and it should be working now.

If you had a Lan shortcut on your desktop delete it, because chances are that it will not work- just put a new one

I hope this will help some of you

Thank you. Unplugging the power cord for a couple of minutes did the trick! After that I installed the driver package that came with my motherboard.
