Realtek’s network controller deep sleep mode issue

As I’ve noticed a fair bit of visitors interested in my post of Windows 7 and Network Controller Deep Sleep Mode problem, I thought I should write a “clean” version of the post (basically the fix for the problem minus my ramblings :) )

The problem starts when the computer goes into sleep/standby mode, a few components of the PC including the network controller (or adapter) are turned off. The issue occurs when the PC wakes up and power to everything is restored. The network controller doesn’t come on and as per Realtek installation message:

The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable

The best fix is to reset the motherboard and the best way to reset your motherboard is to remove your RAM chips. Leave them out for some time (in my case 30 seconds) and put them back in. And that is all! The motherboard will be reset and the network controller will come out of deep sleep mode!

Note: If this doesn’t work, leave the RAM out for good 10 minutes. Leaving the RAM out longer has worked for some people (see comments below).

Note 2: For laptops, removing the battery for 5-10 minutes has worked for a few.

Note 3: If nothing works, turn off the system and plug in a external hard drive (or a USB thumb drive) and then turn the computer on. Once on the desktop, Windows will try to install the external hardware. This, in some cases, has worked and wakes up the network controller.

Once you have it working, to make sure the network controller doesn’t go into sleep mode again, try this:

  1. Open Device Manager by:
    1. Go to Start
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Choose System and Security
    4. Click Device Manager (under System)
  2. Open Network Controller properties by:
    1. Double-click Network adapters to expand it
    2. Double-click the Realtek Network Controller
  3. Turn off Deep Sleep mode by:
    1. Choose the Power Management tab
    2. Untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

Doing this will make sure the network controller is not put in to sleep mode till someone fixes the issue!

Finally, if something does work you please post the Motherboard/Laptop model and the method that worked to help others!

Hello there! I have a question:
By poping out the ram chip, you mean taking out the ram sticks right? not using the cmos jumper right?
    Thanks in advanced.

Hi SJ, yes, that is exactly what I mean. Just take the RAM chip out and for a few seconds and put it back in. I think you can use the CMOS jumper too but sometimes its a bit hard to find.

Removing memory modules “RAM Chips” will not clear a computers CMOS. You can either use the jumper to bridge the correct pins or easier still remove the circular battery for 30 seconds.

@Joe, have you disabled the power save settings on the Network controller? Just double-check that as I’m noticed sometimes Windows 7 doesn’t save the change O_o

    Hi Viktor,

    Try this:
Pull the plug out of the computer and leave it without any power for 5-10 minutes (just to be safe, in my case, the motherboard reset after 90 seconds without power).

Let me know it goes so I can update the blog post.

Hi, Adeel, I want to thank you for your “Realtek’s network controller deep sleep mode” issue. That was helpful!
    A brief history.
As usual, before going to work, I had sent my PC to the sleep mode. And when I returned, my LAN connection got inactive, and in Windows’ Hardware Manager my network controller was under “hidden devices”, the same was under Ubuntu… I was really already going to buy a new network controller! Thank God, I know English, and I found your post!! I would NEVER have thought about removing RAM chips!!! You are a MAN !! Thank you!

How long did you leave the RAM out? Another user suggested leaving out RAM for over 5 minutes resolved it for him. Plugging the power plug out for a couple of hours also has worked for some.

I ran into this problem too while dual-booting Ubuntu/Vista with my Asus-board.
For a moment, I seriously considered this a warranty errand. The network adapter appeared to be completely dead.

However, I noticed that my network adapter worked in Ubuntu, but not in Vista (which got me googling). I found this article and well… It worked perfectly.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks!

Hi Max, I’m assuming its a laptop. Try this:

      1. Go in your BIOS (Delete key or F2 key when you turn your laptop on)
      2. Find a setting for “Plug & Play”.
      3. Turn it “On” if its “Off”
      4. Reboot

PS: If the setting is already “On”, turn it “Off” and reboot. If it doesn’t work, change it back to “On”.

What we are trying to do is “reset” the motherboard. Let me know how it goes.

1-you must do this part first:
    # Turn off Deep Sleep mode by:
    1. Choose the Power Management tab
    2. Untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

2- switch off your pc, take off the wire power and the wire ethernet, open your case and then remove your ram. leave in this way for about 10 minutes.

3- then build everything, turn on your pc and said thanks to adeel :)

that’s works in my case, i hope works to you, user, too.

My network controller is also integrated. And yes, installing a separate card will resolve the issue.

Is the ethernet jack connected to the router or a modem? If it is connected to a router, you can try by checking if the computer can “see” the router at all. To do that, first find the IP of the router (usually is written on the backside of the router or underneath) it is something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.254

Open “Start” and then type in cmd and press enter. Then type in the command prompt:
            ping x.x.x.x
(replace x.x.x.x by router ip) and press enter key. See if the command can see any replies.

the jack is connected to a modem.

i don’t know what can i do.. maybe the best solution is get a new ethernet card, anyway is so strange.. after the isntall of the antivirus and the restart the internet connection is gone..

another strange thing: this problem occurred at the night, next day the internet connection was ok, and then, after the restart, was lost..

now i’m writting from my desktop, but the issue is not solve yet..
is not any antivirus problem.. because after the unistall of kaspersky and the restart of the system the internet connection gone..
so, the solution is the same: take off the ram; only in this way the connection is ok, but if restart for any motivation the system i have the same problem..

anyway i can’t do this operation ever.. i hope that the buy of a new ethernet card solve the issue..

    Hi Adeel

This issue is bugging me on my laptop too.
Removing the ram is a bit nastier than on a desktop pc.

I plugged in the lan cable and refreshed the device list in windows device manager until it appeared again. So maybe you don’t always have to remove ram, lucky for us.

Still looking for a solution with that power management thing

I have another machine with a broadcom lan and it was also enabled to turn off saving power but it was never disabled (even on battery).

It didn’t worked the second time I rebooted.

          I found the real problem:

In device manager properties of the realtek lan in the advanced tab there is something called “Green Ethernet” and it is enabled

If you google it even on wikipedia you can find that it’s a technology that automatically disables unused lan ports and so on.

Each time I connect the ethernet cable the card appears in device manager. So there is nothing to worry about.

Anyone with problems should first check if “green ethernet” is enabled or exists in windows or bios before jumping to other conclusions.

I left it enabled because it saves battery power. You can disable it to check that the lan card doesn’t dissapear again.

Thanks to your posts in this thread i found what was causing the weird deep sleep mode. ;)

Hope it works for everyone who is interested. :)

I found your solution and before I had a chance to try it, I sudenly have a connection. I update all the latest Windows 7 updates and when I returned, no more connection.
My ASUS software CD wasn’t allowing me to complete the repair of Realtec controller. Now it does, but I still have no internet connection. And yes I’ve rebooted, etc. Any ideas left?
Is this just a problem with the ASUS boards? This is a brand new board and I have a return authorization but I hate to get another board similar to this one M4A87TD Evo Extreme Design, and still have problems. Switch to Gigibit?

Have you tried removing the CMOS battery (its a flat battery on your motherboard), remove it for a 60-90 seconds and put it back.

And no, this problem is with the realtek network controller driver for windows 7.. realtek is found on about 95% of all motherboards.

I had the sleep mode problem, fixed it by simply pulling my power plug, and hit the start-the-computer button whilst computer had no power, ie, sucking out all the remaining power, and afterwards going into bios and simply use “Optimized Defaults”

Poff, my network controller was back in device manager.
Installed the lastest updated drivers, worked like a charm.

    But.

Does it say: “Disconnected”? If not, then its not the cable.

Make sure you enter all your network settings again as it clears everything. Sometimes you may need to enter Default Gateway if you are using a router etc.

      Hi Craig,

One way to fix it is turn the computer off and take the power plug out of the socket (so no power is going to the computer). Press the power on button a couple of times to try to turn the computer on (It will not turn on because there is no power but this draws out any remaining power in the PSU). Leave it like that without any power for 5-10 minutes. Then plug the electricity back in and try again.

If that doesn’t work, the only option will be to try to into BIOS and “disable” the onboard LAN and restart the computer. Once in Windows, restart the computer again and go into BIOS and “enable” the onboard LAN.

Let me know how it goes.

    Exact same problem here…

when I get to device manager, and click on “hidden” a bunch of stuff is in there (WAN,RAS, etc) but not Realtek…

Now, every time I disconnect the power cable from my PC it does not start up… actually it starts up, but it shuts itself down after a few seconds… then turns itself on, then down again, etc, etc…I have to clear the CMOS… after a couple of CMOS clearings (because only 1 is not enough), I manage to get some screen (motherboard image, then it asks me to check my BIOS settings)… I get into BIOS, fix all settings, and then it reboots and I get into windows… and then there is nothing to do.
I think I might go and buy a PCI ethernet card tomorrow, to see if I can get anything to work… can’t seem to find a solution…

Forgot to mention that I followed every step mentioned here… I even took apart all motherboard and components… it was a good opportunity to clean it up a bit too… took every single part out, even the little battery… that’s what I’ve been doing all day… no result…
I think it is easier to buy a new ethernet card… they are cheap anyways… in another forum I read that this resolved a guy’s problem… once he installed the new card, the ethernet adapter of the motherboard was then present in device manager… what can I say? Just too tired with it…
My problem started off yesterday after a lightning… even though I use a large UPS… I connected my laptop to the router, with the same cable, and everything worked fine…$#%@$#

Will post more tomorrow, after installing the new card…

As you mention that the problem started after a lightning strike, it is quite possible it took out network controller or router. If the motherboard is under warranty, you can RMA it.

    Hello again,
    I finally bought a new ethernet card (TP-LINK TG-3468).

I installed it, but I get limited connectivity.

I remember I had this problem when building my PC… had to change the IP address of the ethernet card to that of the router (or something like that)…anyone remembers/knows how to do that?

The card’s IP is 169.254.X.X while the router’s is 192.168.X.X

Can’t remember how to fix it… but I had fixed it in the past…

      I’m assuming you have Vista/Windows 7:

Open Network & Sharing Centre. From the list on the left side, click on Network Connections. Right-click on the Ethernet connection you want to change IP settings for and choose Properties. From the popup, double click TCP/IP v4 and here you can change IP settings for the network card.

Make sure you enter 192.168.x.x as you IP and entering router’s IP as Default Gateway.

This solved my problem on an HP laptop model dv7-3186CL.
I had to reset the motherboard, then change the setting in the BIOS for it to power back on.
Tech support for HP called me back today to see if I solved the problem after leaving me hanging and telling me to reformat… I told them to add this problem with the realtek adapters to their documentation haha.

I also have an ASUS.. I’ve been having this problem for a week now… I’ve taken a RAM chip out and the battery and waited 5-10 minutes. I’ve also ‘disabled’ then ‘enabled’ in BIOS.
network adapters are only viewable when i ‘show hidden’ and even then the realtek family controller is gone.

Is there anything else I can do???

You forgot to mention an important piece of info.. Did you lose the controller after you put the Windows 7 to sleep or with any other scenario.. Updating the BIOS would be next on the list.. ASUS makes it pretty easy.. Just download the .ROM and copy it to a USB thumb drive.. Restate and enter BIOS.. And updatezz

Well this network adaptor things is killing me. I Dont show any network adapters under device managers. I’ve tried re-installing the drivers and gotten that cable unplugged message. I’ve tried taking out the ram and the little battery in the computer, went out came back and put it all back together and still nothing. I called the dell tech support and he said my network adapter chip is fried and the computer is not reading it and that i need a whole new mother board for 220 dollars because i have an integrated chip. I can somewhat work my way here and there with computers but what is this updating the BIOS. This will be my last shot before i get another chip and put it in.

Well to help you with the BIOS update you need to tell me the model of your motherboard. And even if the BIOS update doesn’t fix the issue, you can just go and buy a network card, they are cheap and get the job done :)

Seems to me that “Power Management” settings need to be reset. You haven’t mentioned the version of Windows so I’ll try to give a generic work around. Look for a battery icon on the bottom right of the screen. Right-click it and open “Power Management” settings and reset the settings. Restart the laptop to see if it worked.

Make sure your laptop is plugged out from the charger.

Click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.

Click on Change Plan Settings for the plan that is selected. Then click on Restore default settings for this plan and confirm it. Restart and try again.

i think it is still on its basic setting cause the restore button is not selectable. can it be that my laptop is grounded ? cause my AC port and cable port is just right next to each other ? hmmm

    Hi guys,

I recently bought a new, custom PC equipped with an ASRock P55 Deluxe3 mobo. After installing my Win 7 I had the same issue: Network controller not found, not even recognized by Windows, just as if it did not exist.
Installing Drivers ofcourse doesn’t work, as Windows does not know the network controller is there.

I tried a Windows reinstall, BIOS reset through the reset button on my mobo, none of which worked, the onboard LAN is enabled in the BIOS.

It’s pretty sad that i’ve been waiting for 3 weeks on this PC, and it’s arriving with one of its more crucial parts that isn’t working, and none of the solutions work for me.

Did it happen after putting the PC to sleep? If not, then it is a different problem altogether.

no, it happens after my pc shutdown by itself (not in sleep mode), so i’ve tried to repair the driver by reinstalling it but i got this message “The RealTek Network Adapter/Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode enabled Please Plug the Cable”

i have re-check at the device manager and located the network adapter in hidden mode…

the cat5 connector green LED also on (but not blinking).

i don’t know if this was hardware or software/driver problem..

    extra information__

    i’m using asus motherboard m4a87td/usb3

In that case then try going the BIOS and resetting all power settings, or turning them off (mostly they are put as saving power consumption). Try by turning all settings off (which means nothing will be turned “off” by the BIOS to save power, confusing I know!)

do i need to pull of my cmos battery and ram after turning it off too?

Well then it sounds like your network controller is gone. If its under warranty, you could do a RMA otherwise you can just get a cheap PCI network adapter.

I put my computer into the sleep mode and after waking it up, it turned out that the internet connection was lost. It works like a charm if you wait about 10 minutes before inserting the ram chip back.

I really have to say ‘THANK YOU’ to the person who discovered this technique. But please change from “a few seconds” to “10 minutes”.

Adeel, normally when I find an answer to my question on the internet, I never respond to it. But this time I have no other choise to say: THANK YOU !

I accidently put my pc to sleep (and probably a deep one).
I couldn’t get him out off it when I started up next time.
So I remembered from last time, when I had the same problem, to pull out the battery and restart. Worked again. But this time my Network Card was dissapeard?! Searched for hours in BIOS and removing and/or reinstalling the cards… until I saw your solution .. and it worked. It was that easy, but who would think of it? Just pulled the plug and removed the RAMs for a couple of minutes.
    Thanks again!

      Hi,
Sorry for the delay, before trying to open the RAM, you can try resetting your CMOS/BIOS. The process is different for different laptops but usually involves pressing F2 or Delete key to go into BIOS. Then look for “load factory default settings” or similar. It will ask for confirmation. After the restart try to see if Windows can see it. Usually this works. If not, then you will have to open the back of your laptop (usually a small panel) that holds the RAM. I don’t recommend doing this unless you are familiar with computers. Hope this helps..
